Gas Testing: Naylor Drainage

EMERGENCY GAS PURGING & TESTING CASE STUDY

Client:  Naylor Drainage, the UK’s leading manufacturer of clay and plastic drainage pipe.

The problem:

Due to a strong smell of gas, Ormond were called to attend an emergency site visit to find a potential gas leak on commercial property.

Naylor staff members had reported a smell of gas and suspected the source to be coming from underground.

After performing a gas tightness test, Ormond confirmed a gas leak above the legal threshold.

Upon communicating with our client, we devised a plan to urgently find and repair the leak.

Our solution:

After civil engineers exposed the underground gas pipework, Ormond's engineers located the leak. The gas leak was caused by corrosion, due to the anti-corrosion layer being damaged which had allowed fresh water to be in constant contact with steel pipework outer wall. 

The next step was an indirect purge of the 15 cubic meter gas installation.

Purging with nitrogen allowed our gas engineers to safely use hot works (welding).

Once the damaged pipe was cut out and replaced, we did another gas tightness test which was successful.

Concluding the pipework now was safe, we did a direct gas purge and issued a Gas Safe certificate.
