Hot tapping on gas at Holiday Inn

Client: Holiday Inn, Birmingham

About: Hotel chain Holiday Inn operates across the UK and trust Ormond Pipework Services Ltd for our hot tapping services.

The problem:

A Holiday Inn location in Birmingham had acquired a new boiler. To supply the boiler they required a new branch from their 3” gas main.

Turning off and purging the gas supply was not acceptable due to the hotel's 24 hour need for heating and hot water.

The under pressure drilling experts at Ormond Pipework Services Ltd were called in to perform a live pipe tapping.

Our solution:

We first did an ultra-sonic thickness test to confirm if the existing pipework was thick enough to safely weld onto.

A profiled saddle which suited the shape of the 3” main was welded on.

A full-bore lever valve was then fitted and a pressure test was undertaken.

During a live tapping, it important to use a full-bore valve so that the hot tapping equipment can pass freely through the valve without being obstructed.

Upon the successful pressure test, we bolted the under-pressure drill to the 2” gas valve.

We began to drill the live steel pipework and created a 2” hole for the new branch.

Upon completion, a safety plug was fitted into the 2” valve.

Hot tapping benefits was no downtime on the heating and hot water system, which saved on any inconvenience for Holidays Inn guests.

Tasks involved:

  • Hot tapping / under pressure drilling on gas

  • Live tapping on 3” mild steel pipework

  • Commercial pipework

  • Positional welding
