Commercial gas installation for Equans, Thornaby
Client: Equans UK Ltd, on behalf of Northumbria Water
Project overview:
Equans is a facilities management service based in Northumberland. They identified a gas leak within a building belonging to Northumbria Water.
The leak was in an unventilated space above the ceiling tiles. A lack of access meant the gas installation needed rerouting to avoid inadequately ventilated areas.
Due to the complexity of the situation, Equans contracted Ormond Pipework Services Ltd to assist.
The challenge:
Install new 3” steel gas pipework attaching onto an existing installation.
Avoid disruption of critical operations.
Bring the existing gas installation up to safe standard in accordance with Gas Safe regulations.
Our solutions:
Direct Purge of gas main using nitrogen: After isolating the appropriate valves, we attached compressed nitrogen to a purge point and purged out 200 meters of gas. A Gasco seeker was used to confirm a 0% gas atmosphere.
Installation of commercial pipework: Once safely purged, we dismantled part of the existing installation and then welded a positional flange so that we could attach the new pipework.
Gas tightness test: After completing the installation, we did a tightness test to make sure the gas supply was not leaking. A manometer was used to measure any pressure drop
Indirect Purge: Upon the successful pressure test, an indirect purge to gas was completed. The gas was safely purged outside away from any buildings.
Gas Safe Certificate: Finally, a certificate was handed over confirming the gas installation was now at a safe standard and could remain live.
