Commercial Gas Pipework Installation: William Cook
Client: William Cook, Sheffield
About: William Cook is a steel cast manufacturer specialising in supplying the energy, rail and defence industries.
The problem:
Sheffield based steel works factory, William Cook, acquired a new casting machine.
The planned location of the new casting machine was infringed by a 6” steel gas pipe at high level.
In order for the casting machine to be installed in the planned position, the existing gas pipework had to be relocated.
Sheffield commercial gas engineers, Ormond Pipework Services Ltd, were brought in to offer their expertise in industrial gas pipework.
Our solution:
Our first task was fabricating the new 6” main on site.
Using nitrogen, our engineers purged the existing gas installation util there was no gas remaining.
An indirect purge was essential in this case, as there was a large volume of gas and the existing pipework had to be cut using hot works.
We use nitrogen when purging because it is an inert gas, as opposed to air which contains oxygen and therefore can create an explosive atmosphere within the pipe.
After purging, the existing pipework was cut out and the new pipe route was fitted which included positional welds.
Once the new extension was installed, a gas tightness test was done making sure there were no leaks.
Upon the successful test, a direct purge was undertaken using a Gascoseeker to confirm a 100% gas volume.
Finally, Ormond issued a commercial Gas Safe certificate signalling the gas installation was safe and ready for use.
Tasks involved:
Steel pipework fabrication
Gas purging
Gas tightness test
Gas pipework commissioning
Gas Safe certificate
